Many people dream of living a part of their life or their retirement in Italy. Some envision owning a home in Tuscany’s rolling countryside, enjoying al fresco dinners with neighbors while sipping on Chianti. For others it’s waking up each morning in a quaint apartment with expansive views over the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. Perhaps you envision welcoming family & friends to your elegant villa on one of Italy’s northern lakes.

The point of the matter is that any of these options can be your reality. Living a comfortable and relaxing life in Italy is absolutely possible.

Take me, Thea, as an example. I’m a Black American from a middle class family. I didn’t have wealthy parents funding my international travels. I certainly didn’t have a European passport. And still, I have been able to create an absolutely fabulous life on my own terms in Italy with leisurely strolls to the bakery for a fresh pastry in the morning, weekly visits to my favorite butcher and the produce market, evening aperitifs with my incredible network of friends, and several trips per year to jaw-droopingly beautiful locations around Italy and Europe.

WHY I’M THE PERFECT PERSON TO HELP

Ciao, I’m Thea!

The first time I came to Italy was in 2003 to study abroad in a little town called L’Aquila, about an hour from Rome. It was love at first sight, and I couldn’t stop myself from coming back.

Within a few years, I’d done just about everything one could ever dream of doing in Italy.

I spent 2 months studying Italian amongst Florence’s dreamy laneways. I received my master’s degree at Bocconi, a globally renowned Italian University in cosmopolitan Milan (and the program was taught in Italian!). I taught private English lessons throughout my studies, before going on to work for some of Italy’s most famous brands, like Gucci. 

As was bound to happen, I also met and married the Italian love of my life, Diego. We now have a beautiful son, Lorenzo. 

My experience living in different Italian cities and working in various roles across Italy has put me in the unique position of being able to guide fellow expats looking to live in Italy.

WHY I CREATED THIS PROGRAM

I created the Move to Italy program for two reasons.

As long as I have been living in Italy, I have been encouraging friends, family, and complete strangers to move. I LOVE ITALY! And I love sharing information about life in Italy. So, on an immediate level, the masterclass is designed to help future expats like you transition into their life in Italy - to help you avoid some of the mistakes me and my many friends have made over the years.

On a bigger macro level, it’s because I want to help make the world a better place.

At some point in time, the United States lost its way and much of the western world became a rat race. As a culture, people became so obsessed with bigger and faster and more, that many people forgot about the value of family & friends, of laughter & smiles. This isn’t to say that Italy is perfect! It’s not. But in Italy, healthcare is available for everyone. In Italy, people prioritize quality time with loved ones. In Italy, children are taught about how food is produced and how best to consume it. People in Italy still know that food that is produced better not only tastes better, but is also better for the planet.

For those of you who choose to follow your dreams and move abroad, you will be able to look at Italy with inquisitive eyes, to find the joy in slow living and everything it brings. Perhaps, like me, you’ll then look back on your own culture with a fresh perspective and then share that perspective with your friends and loved ones back home. And help show them that there is a better way.
